Yorkshire Terriers - General Information
Yorkshire Terriers are Toy Dogs weighing no more than 7 pounds and standing at the shoulder no higher than 6-7 inches. Their long straight silky hair is tan with steal blue at the roots. The skull is flat with a moderately long muzzle and V-shaped erect ears. Eyes and the edge of eyelids are black, as well as the nose. The docked tail should neither curve over the back, nor be drawn between the legs.

The breed's origin is Great Britain. It is believed that in the 19th century miners who suffered greatly from rats used various Terriers to get rid of those annoying, dangerous rodents. They crossed the Clydesdale Terrier, called also Paisley Terrier with the English Black Terrier and the Skye Terrier. The new breed was called Yorkshire, after the place where most mines were located. The Maltese Terrier's blood is also present in Yorkies. The size of Yorkshire Terriers was gradually diminished and now we have a tiny breed with all the qualities peculiar to these dogs.
The breed was introduced to the United States about the 1800s. The breeding stock came from the UK. By that time, the Yorkshire Terriers Club UK had been already established. The AKC recognized the Yorkshire Terrier in 1878. Yorkshire Terriers became popular in the country and now are one of the most dazzling toy breeds.
